‘Getting married was surreal and nerve-racking all at the same time. Even though we have been together for almost 10 years,
it was butterflies for both of us,’ says Jeandré. ‘We were teenagers when we met, madly in love and crazy for each other,’ Tamryn giggles.
Jeandré blames being so young for his ‘corny’ proposal. ‘I planned an intimate dinner for two at home. The cooking was easy as I was raised by my ouma, who was a killer cook.’ He wined and dined her with Barry White crooning in the background, and then produced
a giant cookie iced with the words ‘Will you marry me?’.
Tamryn’s dad lives in Yzerfontein just 10 minutes away from Geelbek. ‘Much of my childhood was spent on the West Coast and I don’t think there is anywhere else in the world I would have wanted to get married.’ After having lunch at Geelbek with her dad one day, they decided to set a date then and there. ‘Elmarie showed us the venue and church, and the view did the rest. It was breathtaking,’ she recalls.
‘We had a beautiful ceremony in a small chapel set beside a pictur-
esque lagoon. The ceremony itself was very laid-back and we laughed our way through it. It was exactly the type of atmosphere we wanted,’ says Jeandré.
‘I was so nervous and all the laughter really put us at ease. Our reverend did a great job. To this day I often call up the wise words
he left with us: “Marriage is not 50/50, it is 100/100”,’ Tammy adds.
For the reception, they wanted something simple, elegant and timeless – but that didn’t cost the earth. Tammy went to work sourcing inexpensive tchotchkes for table decorations. ‘I love to read old books – the language makes me smile – so I incorporated those into the decor.’ She stitched the look of the day together in this haphazard way.
Tammy’s ‘something old’ was a pair of vintage 1940s Art Deco earrings (found on eBay) and her ‘something borrowed’ was a ring
and a bracelet her best friend Amy wore on her own wedding day.
As for the something blue, Tammy paired her Gavin Rajah dress with electric blue Christian Louboutin heels, which Jeandré’s best man helped her pick out.
After the formalities came the celebration. ‘Our food had a boerekos element to it which made it special as many of my Afrikaans family members were there to enjoy it,’ beams Jeandré. ‘The Karoo lamb
was by far the most delicious I have ever tasted and the dessert was spectacular – the raspberry sorbet was perfect for the warm evening,’ says Tammy.
‘We had the best party for the start of our married lives. It was a perfect fit, everyone we wanted was with us in a beautiful setting that meant so much to Tammy.’ The best part of the day? That’s simple. ‘When Tammy said “I do”.’
