‘Our family farm in Empangeni is a big part of my life and holds a lot of memories, so getting married there was very special,’ says Nicky who exchanged vows with Roger in front of 220 guests on a piece of land that has been in her family for generations.
With friends and relatives flying in from overseas, the Addison house was a hive of activity in the days leading up to the wedding, with everyone chipping in to get things set up for the big day. On the morning of the wedding, all seven bridesmaids helped set the tables and pick flowers while Kevin’s seven groomsmen did the heavy lifting and mowed the lawns.
‘We’re really blessed to have such creative, talented, generous people in our lives. They did a lot to make the wedding what it was,’ says Roger, whose close friend married the couple in the farm’s tractor garage. A simple corrugated iron roof supported by wooden poles, it was a fitting venue for the rustic style Roger and Nicky had envisioned. ‘The ceremony was very meaningful and incredibly moving,’ reminisces Nicky.
The reception was held in a marquee on the lawn in front of the main house, its interior lit by hundreds of fairy lights and Chinese lanterns strung from the ceiling. Adding to the charm were glass jars of baby’s breath, white carnations and daisies. Hand-painted signs, bunting made from photos of the couple and Nicky’s grandmother’s home-made peanut butter biscuits were just a few of the quirky touches that made their wedding day unique. ‘Both Nicky and I are relaxed, easy-going people and we wanted our wedding to reflect that,’ says Roger.
Good food was a non-negotiable for the couple, and guests were treated to platters of carpaccio, dolmades and a selection of artisanal breads for starters followed by a sumptuous main course of Moroccan lamb, Thai chicken dishes and an array of salads. In keeping with the pastoral theme, the selection of puddings was served in tins and glass jars and the wedding cake was a beautiful arrangement of red velvet cupcakes.
But it was after dinner, when guests took to the dance floor, that the celebrations really kicked off – and lasted until the early hours of the morning. ‘Our wedding was one of those epic moments in life. Above and beyond the beauty, what really added to our day was having family and friends, especially Nicky’s grandparents, celebrating with us in a place that held such meaning,’ concludes Roger.
