Since Aimee and Marco spent the week leading up to their big day apart, the anticipation of seeing each other for the first time when taking their vows made the ceremony a powerful culmination of their commitment, and the highlight of their day. ‘We wrote love letters to each other every day, but other than that we didn’t speak at all,’ says Aimee.

Marco had proposed on Camps Bay beach to a very weary Aimee (she had just returned from business in Germany) on her birthday. ‘I had already planned a big birthday dinner with friends that evening, which of course turned into a mini engagement party!’

With their focus firmly on the marriage itself, the style of the wedding only emerged during the planning process. ‘We knew we wanted to get married on a wine farm and that we wanted it to reflect us as a couple: lots of fun, classic yet casual, and innovative with personal touches – all while staying true to the vineyard feel,’ they say.

Hay bales were paired with Wimbledon chairs for seating, and drinks were presented in a mixture of beautiful silver Champagne buckets and rusty old wheelbarrows.

‘We ended up with a creative, classic and personal theme,’ they smile.

Unlike some couples, Aimee and Marco managed to hold on to a healthy perspective through it all. ‘We didn’t want the focus – the celebration of getting married – to get lost in the actual event. So although we did a lot of planning, we knew it would all come together beautifully.’

Despite Aimee’s dad accidentally referring to her as his wife instead of his daughter during the ceremony, Aimee wearing 42m and 15 kg of ivory organza, and Marco sporting a pair of borrowed socks and a full suit in the unforgiving Stellenbosch heat, it was a beautiful day.

Luckily, with the venue doors and windows flung open, the heat became manageable after dark. The couple opened the dance floor to ‘Hard to Concentrate’ by the Red Hot Chili Peppers (their favourite band), the lyrics  of which had been applied to the dance floor in vinyl. Later on, candy floss was handed out on the floor, to the delight of guests.

Of his new wife, Marco says, ‘Aimee has an amazing spirit. She has a magnetism that’s felt by all those she comes into contact with.’ This is echoed in Aimee’s description of Marco as someone who always makes people feel good about themselves. With attributes like these, the occasion was bound to have an extraordinary energy.
